Examples of Previous Diversity Programs

North Middle School Mentor Program

Mentors accompanied 7th Grade Urban Advantage students on field trips to the Denver Botanic Gardens, Museum of Nature and Science, and the Denver Zoo. The 7th grade students selected science research projects on a topic that was relevant to one of their field trips. In the spring semester, mentors helped students complete their research projects and create colorful, informative posters.

Children's Hospital Valentine Craft Day

We visited the Children's Hospital and made valentine's cards with children being treated and their siblings.

Minority Health Conference: Economic Mobility and Minority Health

We broadcasted the Keynote speaker from UNC's 36th Annual Minority Health Conference. Following the webcast, Kaiser Permanente performed some short skits and had an open discussion regarding this topic.

Paris Reading and Writing Program Success!

The Paris Reading and Writing program was a huge success, thanks to our great volunteers and support from the University of Colorado President's Diversity Fund! On our busiest days, we had up to 50 Paris students attend the reading program and 40 at the writing program. Volunteers from our campus spent three Saturdays reading with the students (books included The Day My Butt Went Psycho, the BFG, Happy Birthday Bad Kitty, and The Notebook of Doom). We followed up with an opportunity for the students to write their own stories, incorporating topics like character development and brainstorming into their process with the help of volunteers.
