Applying for Private Loans

• The University does not maintain a preferred lender list and does not endorse or recommend any specific lender.
• Lender information is provided solely for informational and comparison purposes.
• Students and families are free to select any lender of their choice, including those not listed.
• The University receives no financial benefit from the use of any listed lender.
• We encourage borrowers to carefully evaluate loan terms, including interest rates, fees, repayment options, and borrower benefits, before selecting a lender.

Federal law protects you when you borrow a private loan. Under the Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2008, private lenders must give you a Self-Certification Form to complete and sign, and must send you required disclosures at different points in the application process.

If your lender does not give you a Self-Certification Form, contact our office and we can provide one.

Know your rights. Read and understand your rights and responsibilities before you borrow.

Some private lenders offer loans to cover a past due balance from a prior term or academic year. Many lenders let you apply up to 6 months after the balance is created, but the window ranges from one month to one year, so check with your lender.

CU Anschutz must receive the lender's certification request for a prior term balance loan no later than September 15th of the following academic year. We will only certify a prior term balance loan to cover an outstanding balance on your CU Anschutz student account.

What happens next

Our office will email you once we receive and review the loan certification request from your lender. The amount we process may be less than you requested if you have not yet accepted or declined your other loans, or if the request is more than your Cost of Attendance. You can contact us to discuss the amount before the loan is certified.

Loan funds are sent to the University and applied to any balance due on your student account. The Bursar's Office sends any remaining funds to you by direct deposit or mail.

Loan increases

Once we certify an approved private loan, we can rarely increase the amount. In most cases you will need to apply for a new loan.

Loan reductions and cancellations

• If we have not yet notified you that we received the certification request from your lender, work with your lender to reduce or cancel the loan.
• If we have notified you that we received the request, you will need to complete a Loan Adjustment Form.
• If you receive more aid after your private loan is certified, we may need to adjust the loan amount. We will notify you if that happens.
