Federal Loans

What Changed for Federal Loans

Effective July 1, 2026

Grad PLUS ended. Closed to new borrowers. Some continuing students still qualify.
New program and lifetime caps. Total federal borrowing is now capped by program and over your lifetime.
New repayment plans. New loans use the Tiered Standard Plan or the Repayment Assistance Plan (RAP).

Annual Direct Unsubsidized limits for graduate students did not change. If you borrowed before July 1, 2026, different rules may apply. See Federal Student Loan Changes.

How Much You Can Borrow

Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan limits depend on your program. The bars below compare the total you can borrow for a program against the lifetime cap on all federal student loans.

Graduate Programs $20,500 per year
$100,000 program total
Professional Programs (MD, DDS, PharmD) $50,000 per year
$200,000 program total
Lifetime Cap, All Federal Student Loans Undergraduate and graduate combined
$257,500 lifetime cap

Limits apply to new borrowers. Parent PLUS Loans have their own separate limit and do not count toward the $257,500 lifetime cap.

Undergraduate Nursing Students

Two other federal loans apply only to undergraduate students, which at CU Anschutz means undergraduate nursing students: the Federal Direct Subsidized Loan and the Federal Parent PLUS Loan. See the Nursing Loans page for both.
