Generative AI tools can be powerful resources for communicators, supporting creativity, efficiency and innovation across editorial, digital, social, and visual content. This page outlines appropriate and responsible uses of generative AI at CU Anschutz and clear guidelines for acceptable and unacceptable practices. These principles are designed to help ensure AI is used thoughtfully, while aligning with university, legal, and ethical standards.

Appropriate uses for generative AI applications and tools

Editorial, Digital & Social Content

When using AI assistants for editorial, digital & social content creation, it is important that you use them to enhance creativity and productivity, but always maintain the originality.

The preferred AI assistant to be used by communicators at CU Anschutz is Microsoft Copilot. Be cautious when using AI tools, ensuring that personal, sensitive and university data are not uploaded or shared with unvetted AI systems (ChatGPT, Grammarly, Gemini, Sprout Social AI Assist, etc.), as they may not be secure.

  • Brainstorm, research a topic for a story, other text-based content
  • Draft and outline for a story, other text-based content
  • Summarize, edit text/interviews or stories
  • Check and correct grammar
  • Suggest edits to improve writing quality (rephrasing, thesaurus) 
  • Analyze social media trends, social listening
  • Optimize and streamline online advertising campaigns
  • Develop editorial calendars
  • Enhance website content by including keywords, readability, accessibility, performance and other UX/UI website improvements
  • AI-generated content that:
    • is presented as original work
    • is unchecked for accuracy, bias and/or confidentiality
    • violates brand, ethical and/or legal standards like HIPAA
    • is not identified as AI-generated or assisted content

Visual, Audio & Stock Content

When using AI to create or modify images, the intent should be to enhance creativity and productivity while maintaining originality and integrity. AI tools should support the original concept, not replace it, and any edits or enhancements should preserve the essence of the original image. Images should not be altered to the point that the original subject, message, or source is no longer recognizable.

Common image AI assistants used at the university are, Adobe Creative Suite for editing imagery and Adobe Firefly for image creation

Note: the use of AI stock photos in university communications and marketing is currently prohibited. Stock services like Adobe Stock, are now including AI generated assets in their libraries. They are clearly labeled and easy to filter out.

Acceptable UsesUnacceptable Uses
  • Editing original images (e.g. color, composition, exposure, etc.)
  • Removal and addition of objects in an image for which we own
  • Creation of images to enhance the creative process
  • For pre-production work (e.g. storyboards, inspiration, etc.)
  • Using exclusively AI-Generated images, graphics, music, audio and video for university communications and marketing purposes
  • Any and all assets that are altered to the point that they are no longer recognizable
