The strength of the RLC is that its membership reflects the broad cultural array of the surrounding community. Another strength is that it is 100% leader led. The Rising Leaders use a consensus decision-making model that focuses on gathering the perspectives of all members before taking any formal action.
The RLC believes in building personal one-on-one relationships with Aurora residents. The RLC's first major responsibility was to conduct a Connection Campaign in the community. In a Connection Campaign, RLC members meet with their respective networks to learn about their priorities, hopes, concerns and other issues of importance.
Between 2015 and 2024, the RLC conducted four major Connection Campaigns, during which members engaged with over 3,000 residents across Aurora and Denver. Early campaigns revealed concerns around educational disparities, economic opportunities, and the effects of gentrification. The latest campaigns have revealed issues such as mental health concerns and the rising incidence of gun violence. The insights gained from these campaigns and follow-up meetings have shaped the RLC’s actions and initiatives over the years.
In 2017, the RLC launched a Building Quality Schools campaign, advocating for more inclusive educational curriculums. In 2018, it helped establish El Alba Cooperative, a member-led food and catering business aimed at bolstering economic wealth for local communities. In 2023, the RLC organized a community action meeting to address safety in schools and neighborhoods, bringing together over 250 community members and representatives from Aurora Public Schools and the local police department.
As the RLC looks to the future, it remains committed to expanding its work into additional communities, growing its capacity-building efforts, and strengthening partnerships with local institutions. By continuing to empower and elevate community leaders through inclusive practices, the RLC will ensure that historically disadvantaged populations have the capability, skills, and resources to advocate for themselves and drive meaningful change in creating equitable opportunities for ALL.
