CHANCELLOR'S COMMUNIQUE

Announcing new Marcus Institute, 5-12-2017

Dear colleagues,

Just moments ago, our campus announced some remarkable news. With a $38 million philanthropic commitment, The Marcus Foundation has made possible a one-of-a-kind traumatic brain injury (TBI) institute that promises to transform health care for military veterans throughout Colorado and the Rocky Mountain region.

The Marcus Institute for Brain Health (MIBH), located at the CU Anschutz Health and Wellness Center, will serve military veterans with TBI and related psychological health conditions. It will open its doors to patients this summer. We are fortunate to have James Kelly, MD, join us as its executive director. Dr. Kelly led the National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE) at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for seven years. NICoE has successfully treated more than 1,300 active-duty servicemen and women suffering from TBI and psychological health conditions.

The Marcus Foundation was established by retired co-founder of The Home Depot Bernard Marcus, who serves as the foundation’s chairman. He and his wife, Billi, have been recognized among the country’s top philanthropic leaders, and we are humbled by their partnership.

Our campus — with deep roots to the military, and a robust network of expertise and resources for veterans already in place — is the ideal place for the Marcus Institute for Brain Health. From our beginnings on the grounds of the former Fitzsimons Army Medical Center to the dynamic academic medical center we are today, we were quite literally built for this. In collaboration with our hospital partners and our colleagues across the CU system, we are uniquely equipped to deliver world-class care to our veterans and help return thousands of individuals and families to their lives.

Providing the highest level of care to those who have so selflessly served our country isn’t just a good idea, it’s a moral imperative. With this tremendous philanthropic investment, The Marcus Foundation helps us serve those who have served.

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Kelly and thanking all of those involved in making the Marcus Institute for Brain Health a reality for CU Anschutz and veterans across Colorado and beyond.

Best,

Don Elliman
Chancellor
