NIH policy for all applications submitted after January 2023
Effective May 25, 2026, NIH requires all current and new grant submissions to utilize the new Data Management and Sharing Plan format. This format incorporates planning and budgeting for data storage technology to be compliant with the 2023 NIH Data Management & Sharing Policy (DMSP).
In collaboration with the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research, the Office of Grants and Contracts, Strauss Health Sciences Library, the Center for Innovative Design and Analysis and Biomed Informatics, Information Strategy and Services has compiled a unified resource list to assist researchers with this change.

The NIH Data Management & Sharing Policy went into effect January 2023 and applies to all NIH grant applications submitted after that date.
The policy promotes the sharing and reuse of data for future research studies. Under the policy, NIH expects investigators to:
Utilizing existing storage systems, both national repositories provided by NIH and university enterprise solutions, will enable compliance with this policy and sharing across the campus. We advise against creating new storage systems as it will limit the accessibility and sharing potential required by the policy.
