The Lancet Commission Teacher Training Fellowship
on Medicine, Nazism, and the Holocaust

You will receive a certificate of competence in teaching about medicine, Nazism, and the Holocaust. This is not a degree granting program, nor does it provide transferable graduate school credits. In future years, CME credits may be offered, but these are not available for the pilot year (free) cohort.

The Vienna program will be held at the Josephinum, a historical building that is part of the Medical University of Vienna, in conjunction with the Lancet Commission’s release of its Report on Medicine, Nazism and the Holocaust.

The Los Angeles program will be hosted by the Center for Medicine, Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and is scheduled for November 18th & 19th, 2024.  

The members of the Lancet Commission on Medicine, Nazism and the Holocaust will be the primary faculty for the program. An introduction to the Commission is available here.

Tuition is being waived for the pilot year cohort.  Travel costs for the in-person components of this hybrid program will vary depending on where you are traveling from.  A reasonable estimate is that the cost for travel and accommodation to attend both conferences will be around $4,000 USD.

Perhaps the most important question, and we are still working on this. We have extremely limited scholarship funds available and are hoping to obtain additional funds to support participant travel, but applicants should not count on this. 

Virtual sessions will be held synchronously and will include interactive components that are not replicable using asynchronous methods. Collaborative reflective learning is integral to the program.  Therefore, we expect participants to make a concerted effort to attend all sessions. However, we also understand that circumstances can arise that make it impossible to attend a session.  If you are unable to attend a virtual meeting, we ask that you let us know in advance or quickly thereafter and completing a makeup assignment will be required.  In addition to the makeup assignment, virtual sessions will be recorded and made available to participants.  Attendance at all sessions, or completion of the relevant makeup assignment, will be required to obtain the certificate. 

There is a pre-test that must be completed prior to starting the program, and there will be a post-test exam at completion of the program.  Because this is the pilot year, we have not yet established standards for passing the final program exam.  Participants will also present a capstone project at the conclusion of the program, which will be evaluated by the program faculty and by their fellow program participants.

We estimate there will be 4-5 hours of pre-work for each virtual synchronous session, plus the time that participants will use in developing their capstone projects, including mentor meetings and providing feedback on each other’s projects over the course of the year.  It is fair to assume an average of about 8-10 hours per month will be devoted to the program.
