Security Awareness Training Required for POI
Apr 22, 2026
The university’s Security Awareness Training is required for all faculty and staff to take every two years. Persons of Interest (POI) are non-university employees with access to university systems so that they can complete important work with the university. POIs include volunteer faculty, work-study employers, vendors, consultants, and employees at CU Medicine and UCH.
Since POIs have access to university resources, whether it be physical spaces or university data through various applications, it is important that POIs have up to date training to obtain knowledge on how to protect computers and data, recognize common risks, and use access responsibly to support a secure and trusted environment.
POIs are now required to take the same Security Awareness Training as faculty and staff within 60 days after they start with the university, and every two years they continue to work with the university.
The training course covers essential security principles related to data management at CU:
How to report a suspected or actual security incident
Your responsibility when managing sensitive university data
Recognizing phishing scams through practical examples
Physical security
Key features of a strong password
The importance of multi-factor authentication
Indicators of possible insider threat
If you oversee a POI and have any questions about this new requirement, please contact our Service Desk.
