It was great meeting so many interested potential Masters of Science in Palliative Care (MSPC) and the Interprofessional Palliative Care Certificate (IPCC) students at the annual Assembly of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM) and the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association (HPNA) last week. The enthusiasm for our new programs was evident. There was a definite “buzz” in the exhibit hall.  In addition to distributing over 750 program brochures, we came home empty handed having given out all our “bling” – iPallCARE pens, luggage tags, and “smart cell phone pockets”. One thing we did bring back to Colorado is the many business cards you graciously shared and your contact information.

Many of our interprofessional faculty were on hand at the University of Colorado booth to talk about our new programs and answer some common questions. It was exciting to hear about your goals and desires to learn more about palliative care. Our programs fill a much needed niche.

Here are the top 6 questions many of you had.

1. Who can do the programs?
Both programs are open to interdisciplinary health professionals (physicians, physician assistants, nurses [BSN, including advanced practice nurses], and pharmacists) who are licensed in the United States.

2. How much of the programs are online?  On campus?
Both programs are offered online using the Canvas platform. However, there are three courses In the MSPC and one in the IPCC that are considered to be in a hybrid format with most weeks offered online + one intensive 3-day weekend class that students will need to attend in person on campus in Aurora, Colorado. The Anschutz Medical Campus is located 20 minutes from Denver International Airport. Hotel accommodations are located across the street from campus where all the courses will be offered.

3. What is the weekly time commitment needed to take a three-credit class?
We suggest that you plan to spend approximately 12 hours/week reading and reviewing content and participating in online discussions and Zoom teleconferences.

4. How long does it take to complete the interprofessional Master’s and Certificate Programs?
The MSPC program consists of 36 hours and will take two full years. The IPCC program consists of 12 hours and will take two semesters (Fall and Spring)

5. Can you do both programs on a part time basis?
Our programs are full time and have been designed for the working professional.  However, if work or life gets in the way, you can talk with the program director to determine a schedule that will work for you.

6. If I complete the Palliative Care Certificate Program (12 credit hours) but decide to apply to the Master’s Degree program at a later time, will those credit hours transfer?
Yes, those credit are transferable. We would recommend that you discuss this program with your employer as many healthcare systems often support providers to improve and expand their skills, particularly if your healthcare system sees palliative care as a needed service. Supporting your training may align well with their institutional goals.  We can provide information to your employer about the program upon request.
