Chelsey Patten joined the Center for Bioethics and Humanities in October 2023 as Director of Clinical Ethics. She co-directs the Ethics Consultation Service at University of Colorado Hospital and is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine, with a dual appointment in the Division of General Internal Medicine and the Section of Pediatric Palliative Medicine. Chelsey chairs the UCHealth System Ethics Committee and co-chairs the University of Colorado Hospital Ethics Committee. She also supports the ethics program at Children’s Hospital Colorado and serves on its ethics committee.
Chelsey plays a leading role in advancing clinical ethics infrastructure across the UCHealth system, including support for the Clinical Ethics Ambassador Program (CEAP), oversight of the Clinical Ethics Education Council (CEEC), and strategic guidance for the Ethics Grand Rounds series. She also leads initiatives focused on integrating cultural and religious values into patient care and expanding support for moral distress among healthcare professionals.
She has contributed to national policy development through her work with National POLST and currently serves on the Colorado MOST Program and the Colorado Healthcare Ethics Forum (CHEF) Board of Directors.
Before joining the Center, Chelsey led major clinical ethics program development in a large hospital system in North Carolina and an academic medical center in Illinois. From 2018 to 2023, she served in clinical ethicist and leadership roles, completing over 850 consultations.

Elected core faculty are selected through a formal review and voting process in recognition of their leadership and sustained contributions to the Center’s mission. They play a central role in shaping and advancing the Center's programs, mentor future scholars and represent the Center within and beyond the University. Members are typically expected to hold a University faculty appointment and maintain active involvement in the Center’s academic and community activities.
Exceptions to the appointment requirement may be granted by Center leadership and a majority vote of the elected core faculty.
