Organized medicine in the US carries a legacy of racial bias and segregation that must be understood and acknowledged today. For more than 100 years, many state and local medical societies openly discriminated against black physicians, and the AMA was early and persistent in countenancing this racial segregation. This history of segregation, bias, and exclusion continues to adversely affect American medicine and the patients we serve.
