Three Main Barriers Hamper Weight Loss Surgery for Obese Teens

In a survey of adolescent metabolic and bariatric surgery patients published on March 22 in Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases, Eric G. Campbell, PhD and co-authors found that barriers included lack of information, social stigma, and access issues related to costs. "Reduced access to metabolic bariatric surgery for adolescents with severe obesity removes care that could dramatically improve their quality of life and reduce mortality," said Campbell.
