The current standards for rationing care largely rely on a formula to quantify patients’ odds of surviving the next month and the next year. The scoring system doesn’t allow the triage team to consider non-medical factors, like a person’s socioeconomic status, but those could be relevant in deciding who can safely be sent home with a referral to outpatient care, said Matthew Wynia, MD, MPH.
