Safeguarding Personally Identifiable Information (PII) is essential to maintaining security and trust within our university community. PII is any data that can be used to identify a specific individual, either on its own or when combined with other information. This includes direct identifiers like full names and Social Security numbers, as well as indirect identifiers such as date of birth and gender. PII data is considered confidential and highly confidential based on the university’s data classification, so you should treat and protect it as you would your own personal data.
To enhance information security awareness, Information Security and IT Compliance (ISIC) will be enabling Microsoft Defender SmartScreen on university devices. Microsoft Defender SmartScreen helps protect users by notifying them when they are navigating to a malicious website or attempting to download or run malicious software. If a user finds themselves on a website that Microsoft Defender SmartScreen identifies as a risk, it will notify the user with a warning banner. Enabling this will be a phased rollout process for university devices beginning December 16th, 2024. ISIC will start with several sample groups and will gradually enable it on more devices and browsers.
The Baseline Secure Computing Standards apply to all university-owned devices used by faculty, staff, students and other authorized individuals connected to the CU network. This includes all workstation computers such as desktops and laptops. These Standards were developed to support the university in its mission to comply with the Administrative Policy Statement (APS) 6005 IT Security Program as well as CU Systemwide Baseline Security Standards. Together, these standards are designed to improve computer performance, streamline IT support, and strengthen IT security.
