Message from the Chancellor
Mourning a loss to the CU Anschutz community, 7-29-2026
Dear CU Anschutz community,
It is with profound sadness that we share the unexpected passing of our colleague, Dr. Jason Stoneback, professor in the Department of Orthopedics at the CU Anschutz School of Medicine.
In his roles as executive vice chair of clinical affairs, chief of orthopedic trauma and fracture surgery, and leader of the Limb Restoration Program, Dr. Stoneback transformed the lives of countless patients through innovative and compassionate care. An exceptional physician, educator and leader, his impact extended far beyond the operating room. He was deeply respected by his patients, students, trainees, faculty and staff for his extraordinary skill, unwavering compassion and commitment to advancing orthopedic care.
While we do not have additional details to share at this time, we know our entire campus joins us in mourning this tremendous loss. Our hearts are with Dr. Stoneback's family, loved ones, colleagues and all who were touched by his remarkable life and work.
We will share additional information in the coming days, including opportunities to honor Dr. Stoneback’s life and legacy, as it becomes available.
We recognize this news may be especially hard for many in our campus community. Support and resources are
available here for anyone who may need them.
Please keep Dr. Stoneback’s family and everyone in our orthopedics community in your thoughts during this incredibly difficult time.
Sincerely,
Don Elliman
