CHANCELLOR'S COMMUNIQUE

Supporting transgender rights, 2-27-2017

Dear campus community,

Last week, the White House rescinded May 2016 guidance regarding transgender rights at K-12 schools and higher education campuses.

CU Denver | Anschutz remains unwavering in our commitment to being a diverse, engaged community that supports all of our community members. We wholeheartedly support our transgender students and employees and will continue to ensure that they receive all the protections necessary to ensure their equal participation in the life of the university.

The White House announcement does not alter existing federal or Colorado law that provides discrimination protection for transgender individuals. The announcement does not change our Nondiscrimination PolicySexual Misconduct Policy or our interpretation of either. We will continue to prohibit discrimination or harassment based on gender identity, gender expression and/or sexual orientation. If you witness or are subject to harassment or discrimination, please report the incident to the Office of Equity so the university can investigate and follow up.

The university offers many additional resources for supporting our transgender students and employees, including maps of gender-inclusive restrooms.

Our diversity -- in all its forms, including gender identity and expression -- is a great source of pride for this university, where there is a common belief that diverse identities and viewpoints enrich the learning and professional environment for all of us. Our shared responsibility is to put that diversity into action by creating and maintaining an environment that is welcoming, safe, and inclusive for everyone.
