Spring Commencement Plans, 4-21-20

Dear CU Anschutz students, faculty and staff,

Commencement is a time-honored tradition and an opportunity to celebrate all that our graduates have accomplished in pursuit of their degrees. While we share your disappointment about the cancellation of our in-person ceremonies originally scheduled for May 21 and 22, we write today with plans for carrying forward our traditions in new and innovative ways while keeping our community safe.

We are pleased to invite all of our spring 2020 graduates, their families and friends, faculty and staff to take part in a special virtual commencement ceremony on Friday, May 22, at 9:30 a.m. In addition to the main ceremony, the School of Medicine, CHA/PA Program, Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Colorado School of Public Health and Graduate School will hold virtual recognition events on May 21 and May 22. Graduates will receive formal invitations to the main ceremony and their individual recognition events from their school or college.

The College of Nursing and School of Dental Medicine will invite their graduates to in-person ceremonies later in the year, in lieu of virtual convocations.

To help our graduates and families get into the commencement spirit, we are creating resources for you to use on social media, and we will be sharing inspiring stories of our graduating students and their many achievements throughout the coming month. In addition, Colorado Governor Jared Polis has shared a special message for CU Anschutz graduates ahead of the big event.

If this pandemic has shown us anything about the CU Anschutz Medical Campus, it is our tremendous strength and resilience as a community. For our graduating class, the challenges that you have faced in the final months of your education are nothing short of monumental. But the determination you have demonstrated throughout these unprecedented times will serve you well as you embark on ambitious careers in health and medicine. I have no doubt that the members of the class of 2020 will go on to transform healthcare in ways we cannot even yet imagine, and we are excited to welcome you into our distinguished alumni community.

We look forward to celebrating the Class of 2020 on May 22, and more information about commencement can be found on the spring 2020 commencement website.

Sincerely,

Don Elliman
Chancellor
