Spring 2021 Commencement Plans, 3-22-21

Dear students, faculty and staff,

Today, I write to share plans for celebrating our May 2021 graduates later this spring. We are excited to honor the commencement tradition in new and unique ways, while safely recognizing all our graduates as they proudly accept their degrees and embark on ambitious careers in medicine and health.

We are pleased to host a special virtual commencement ceremony at 2 p.m. on the afternoon of Friday, May 28, for all our spring graduates, their families and friends, and our faculty and staff. This ceremony will bring our community together to take part in a time-honored tradition, and to welcome graduates into a distinguished community of accomplished alumni. In addition to the main ceremony, graduates will receive formal invitations to individual recognition events hosted by their programs.

Our schools and college have developed innovative opportunities to further celebrate our graduates’ achievements, taking class sizes and other factors into account. Some of these school- and program-based commencement activities are outdoor, in-person affairs limited to graduates and faculty only, and others are virtual events open to families and guests. In all cases, we have been guided first and foremost by a commitment to the safety of our community, and held to the constraints that the COVID-19 pandemic has placed on university operations.

We have learned over the past year that there are many ways to honor and recognize our graduates, whose perseverance and accomplishments are inspiring to us all. We look forward to celebrating this tremendous milestone with the members of the class of 2021, helping to send them off to wherever their journeys take them next.
