Acknowledging the Benson Legacy, 6-13-19

Dear colleagues,

At the end of this month, Bruce Benson will conclude his 11-year run as president of the University of Colorado.\

Bruce’s success as the longest-serving CU president in 65 years has been covered extensively, including record levels of enrollment, research funding, fundraising and many other measures across the CU system.

We especially appreciate his efforts on behalf of the CU Anschutz Medical Campus, which is today in the strongest state – academically and financially – in its history. This achievement is due in no small part to Bruce’s work and assistance in the areas of philanthropy, mental health initiatives, improved relationships with our affiliate clinical partners, and major donor solicitations, as well as his very sound general guidance and thoughtful leadership. His establishment of the Presidential Scholarship at the School of Medicine has increased student diversity and changed lives.

His unwavering support for all CU students is illustrated by his faithful attendance at nearly every graduation ceremony during his presidency – some 86 ceremonies at four campuses. At the CU Anschutz commencement last month, our students were the last of more than 150,000 graduates to be sent on their way, freshly minted CU diploma in hand, by President Benson.

To acknowledge the significant and enduring contributions to CU Anschutz made by President Benson and his remarkable partner Marcy, we will be naming the centerpiece of our new Anschutz Health Sciences Building, currently under construction, in their honor. The Marcy and Bruce Benson Atrium -- a massive light- and plant-filled space, seven stories tall and with a footprint of 13,000 square feet -- will be a lasting reminder of their impact. See an artist rendering of this spectacular space below.

The Bensons will leave a rich legacy on this campus, the university and the entire state -- and we're all better off for it.
Best,
