CO-WY Alliance for Minority Participation

The mission of the CU Denver Colorado/Wyoming Alliance for Minority Participation (CO-WY AMP) program is to increase the number of historically underrepresented African American, Native American, Latinx, Pacific Islander, and Alaska Native students earning bachelor’s and graduate degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

CU Denver is one of the host institutions in Colorado and Wyoming. This program is sponsored by the National Science Foundation; our main administrative office is at Colorado State University, in Fort Collins, Colorado.

Internship Opportunities

The Colorado-Wyoming Alliance for Minority Participation (CO-WY AMP) developed the International Research Initiative (IRE) for students at 2-year and 4-year institutions to provide laboratory research or field experiences at international locations. As part of the IRE program, students are provided transportation and additional funds to cover housing or incidental costs, as needed. The international program must have a clear scope of STEM research or field experience that involves a faculty mentor with on-site supervision for the duration of the project.

The Colorado-Wyoming Alliance for Minority Participation (CO-WY AMP) developed the Summer Research Initiative (SRI) opportunity for students from 2-year and 4-year institutions to integrate them into laboratories and research programs with direct mentor/professor supervision in both academic-year research as well as summer research enrichment programs.

La Selva Research Station and Las Cruces Research Station provide undergraduate students with unparalleled access to tropical forest ecosystems, mentoring by experienced tropical ecology researchers, and training in field research methodology. Each student will work with an on-station mentor as well as an on-campus mentor from their home institution to ensure the integration of the summer research experience into students’ academic careers.

SUMMiT is a collaborative series designed to quantitatively and qualitatively enhance summer undergraduate research programs by focusing on the unique needs of traditionally underrepresented students in science and research fields. Selected trainees will participate in targeted career development sessions held throughout the summer.

At CU Denver and CU Anschutz Medical Campus, undergraduate students are building robots, creating documentary films, and developing new imaging techniques to detect cancer. You can be a part of this exciting world of discovery. Research opportunities exist in campus laboratories, studios, and beyond.

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is an intensive overseas language and cultural immersion program for American students enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities. The program includes intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences designed to promote rapid language gains. CLS is part of a wider government initiative to expand the number of Americans studying and mastering foreign languages that are critical to national security and economic prosperity. CLS plays an important role in preparing students for the 21st century's globalized workforce and increasing national competitiveness.

Graduate School Opportunities

The Graduate School administers and serves Master's programs, Doctoral programs, Certificates, and non-degree courses throughout all thirteen schools and colleges across both the Denver and the Anschutz Medical Campuses. We offer resources and support for prospective graduate students, current graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty.

CO-WY AMP Staff

Dominic F. Martinez is the Site Coordinator for the Colorado-Wyoming Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation at CU Denver, and the Assistant Vice Chancellor of the Office of Inclusion and Outreach at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. Before becoming the Senior Director, Dominic served as the Director, Assistant Director, and Associate Director of the Office which he has now been with for over ten years. Prior to his arrival at CU, Dominic worked at the University of Wyoming as the Assistant Director of Admission and Coordinator of Minority Student Recruitment for over four years. Dominic graduated from the University of Wyoming with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Secondary Education with an emphasis in Multicultural History and Student Movements. Dominic received his Master of Arts degree in Religious Studies with an emphasis in diversity and cultural/religious identities from the Department of Religious Studies at CU Boulder and his Doctorate of Education degree in Leadership for Educational Equity from CU Denver School of Education and Human Development. Dominic and his wife, Amber Martinez are proud parents of three beautiful children.

Kathy Le and is a sophomore at CU Denver studying biology and is an undergraduate assistant for the CO-WY AMP program. Kathy's interests include tennis, arts and crafts, baking, hanging out with friends and family, and volunteering. She likes to help others when she can, whether it is through work, school, volunteering, etc. She is very outgoing, creative, hardworking, caring, and always willing to lend a hand. Throughout her time as a student at CU Denver, she would like to be able to get her biology degree and advance in the medical field as a Dermatologist. She wants to be able to have connections with patients and continue providing service in the community. Kathy is also a first-generation student. She thinks the CO-WY AMP program is a great opportunity for students in the STEM field to continue pursuing the goals they want to achieve with support along the way.

Samone Hubbart is a Program Tutor for the Colorado-Wyoming Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation at CU Denver, and a junior at CU Denver majoring in Biology, on a Pre-Med track. She is a math tutor for the Learning Resource Center at CU Denver, and an Outreach Coordinator for the Biology Club. During her free time, she enjoys volunteering at hospitals & nursing homes, helping with research, and reading.
