Understanding my Power and Privilege in Medicine

Whether you see health care as a right or a privilege, it's impossible not to see the health disparities that exist in our communities. Though much attention has been paid to the social determinants of health and bias (both implicit and explicit), less attention has been paid to looking at the role privilege (or the lack of privilege) plays in the lives our health care professionals and the patients/communities we serve. Understanding our own privilege and being able to use that privilege and power to lift up our communities is essential in creating a more just and equitable health care system. I look forward to helping you reflect, and hopefully, commit to action.
