The impact of COVID-19 was devastating for Native American Communities. Early in the pandemic, the Navajo Nation had the highest rates of COVID-19 in the world. Providing patient care in a rural setting with unique cultural and community considerations during the pandemic led to a renewed commitment to addressing health disparities. In this session, we will discuss the COVID-19 experience at Northern Navajo Medical Center and how the Indian Health Service (IHS) and Navajo Nation worked together to respond to this crisis. Adapting patterns of care and maximizing cultural strengths led to programming which recognized the resilience of the Navajo people. Lessons learned during COVID-19 will persist in the IHS efforts to provide high quality care to tribal communities experiencing health inequities.
